The job here
What's different about dust control here.
- Soil
Around Grants Pass, Merlin and Williams, the county soil survey groups soils that "formed in material derived dominantly from granitic rock", and warns that "when the soils in this group are disturbed, the hazard of erosion is high."4
- Soil
Holland sandy loam, one of the county's mapped soils, sits on a subsoil "over decomposed granite".4
- Dust
For Manita loam the survey names the problem outright: "the main limitations are steepness of slope and dustiness when the soil is dry."4
- Road surface
What we spray, lignin sulfonate, is especially good on roads with more dirt and sand. A road short on fine material tends to washboard; federal guidance says "a fines content … of between 12 and 15 percent is typically required."5
- Climate
Grants Pass gets 31.31 inches of rain in a normal year but only 1.31 inches from June through August. July's normal high is 90.5°F, with about 55 days a year at 90°F or more.2
- Climate
That is far wetter than Medford over the year (31.31 against 18.43 inches), with a summer every bit as dry.23
- Landmark
Downriver, the Hellgate Recreation Area runs "27 miles long, from the mouth of the Applegate River to Grave Creek."6
- Landmark
The Applegate Valley wine region reaches into both Jackson and Josephine counties.7
Who maintains your road here
Four kinds of road in Josephine County.
-
County-maintained
Josephine County keeps "570 miles of county-maintained roads". Questions about one go to Public Works at (541) 474-5460.1
-
Local access
Public roads that "have not been accepted into Josephine County's maintained road system". The county's own answer to who maintains them: "People who live on the road."1
-
Private
The county says it has no jurisdiction over private roads, and that disputes between owners "are civil matters".1
-
Federal forest
Forest roads are outside the county's jurisdiction too. Those go to the agency that runs them.1
We found no Josephine County dust abatement program. Call Public Works to confirm for your road.1
Shared roads
No county program. The neighbors decide.
With no county program to lean on, a shared gravel road in Josephine County gets treated when the people on it agree to treat it. That makes the conversation between neighbors the first job, before any truck shows up.
One call covers the whole road. Tell us where it starts and stops and how many households use it, and we quote the whole road in one go.
Timing here
The rain chart is the season.
The chart at the top of this page is the whole story: Grants Pass is wet from October to April and close to bone dry from June to September.2 Dust shows up when the rain stops.
ODF's Southwest Oregon District started the 2026 fire season on May 15.8 In regulated-use season, ODF says motor vehicles "are only allowed on improved roads free of flammable vegetation."9 The ODF Grants Pass Unit is at 5375 Monument Dr.10
