Dust control for Ashland, Talent and Phoenix
We treat driveways, private roads and farm and vineyard lanes through Ashland, Talent and Phoenix, out of Medford. If the gravel is a City of Ashland street or alley, the city wants a permit first, issued at least two weeks ahead.1
-
1 A City of Ashland street or alley
- Permit from Ashland Public Works
- Issued no less than two weeks ahead
- MSDS sheets go in with the application

2 A county-maintained gravel road
- The county's dust abatement program
- Jackson County Roads explains how it works
- The county preps its sections at no cost

3 A local access or private road
- Local access: public, but outside the county system
- The county is not liable for its repair
- So the people on the road arrange it

The job here
What's different about dust control here.
- Soil
South of Ashland the survey describes granite that "occurs as bodies that are several square miles in size".5
- Soil
Manita loam turns up "about 4 miles west of Phoenix".5
- Soil
Along Bear Creek the survey flags "the shrink-swell potential in areas of the Medford soils".5
- City streets
Ashland requires a permit "for the use of a dust suppressant on a City street or alley". The product "must meet the City of Ashland and the Department of Environmental Quality standards", applicants "MUST submit MSDS sheets", and permits are issued "no less than two weeks in advance".1
- Climate
Ashland's summer is a little milder: a July normal high of 88.1°F and about 38 days a year at 90°F or more, against about 61 at Medford airport.67
- Climate
It is still dry: 1.66 of Ashland's 19.53 inches of rain fall from June through August.6
- Landmark
The Bear Creek Greenway "offers a greenbelt recreation site" along the creek.5
Vineyards and orchards
Dust on the leaves.
The south valley sits inside the Rogue Valley wine region.8 For webspinning spider mites in grapes, UC IPM's advice starts with the roads: "Apply water or other materials formulated to reduce dust on roads in the vineyard."9
What we spray is plant-based lignin, described as safe for plants. Tell us what grows along the lane before we book.
How to check yours
Not sure whose road it is?
-
Inside Ashland
A city street or alley goes through Ashland Public Works and its permit.1
-
Outside the city
Call Jackson County Roads at (541) 774‑8184. The county notes that unimproved roads may need further research.3
-
Fire-safe driveways
Jackson County's fire-safety check sheet sets the driveway's width, base rock, grade and fuelbreak. Dust control is not part of meeting it.10
