Upper Rogue, Hwy 62
Dust control for Eagle Point, Shady Cove and the Upper Rogue
We run up Hwy 62 from Medford to treat driveways, private roads and ranch lanes around Eagle Point and Shady Cove. The valley terraces here carry clay soils with a high shrink-swell potential.1
The job here
What's different about dust control here.
- Soil
The Agate-Winlo-Provig soils lie "on fan terraces in the valley of the Rogue River", with "a high shrink-swell potential".1
- Soil
The county soil survey took its Abin silty clay loam sample "about 2 miles southwest of Eagle Point", and its Evans loam sample "about 2 miles south of Shady Cove".1
- Road surface
Clay changes the product question. The Forest Service guide notes that "some palliatives require a clay component (plasticity index)". Tell us what your road is made of when you call.3
- Corridor
Shady Cove calls itself "the recreational hub of the Rogue-Umpqua National Scenic Byway (Hwy 62)".2
- Climate
There is no official NOAA normals station in Eagle Point or Shady Cove. The nearest, Medford airport, has a July normal high of 91.6°F and 1.25 inches of rain from June through August.4
- Jurisdiction
Jackson County says "a local access road is a public road that has not been accepted into the county road system or any other road system".5
Rural drives and fire season
What a fire-ready driveway looks like.
Jackson County's fire-safety check sheet for driveways asks for a travel surface "a minimum 12' wide, and a minimum of 14' wide on all curves", "a 22' wide fuelbreak along the entire driveway", a driveway "designed for a 50,000 pound load, and has at least 6" of base rock", and "a maximum grade of 15%".6
Those are standards for the driveway itself: its width, base, grade and the fuel beside it. Dust control treats the surface for dust. It is a separate job and has no part in meeting them.
Who maintains your road here
County road, local access, or yours.
-
County-maintained gravel
People who live along a county-maintained gravel road can use the county's dust abatement program, and the county prepares its road sections at no cost to them. Jackson County Roads can explain how it works.7
-
Local access
Public, but never accepted into the county system. Under state law the county is "not liable for failure to improve the local access road or keep it in repair".58
-
Private
A private road or shared drive is up to the owners on it. That is the road association's job, or yours.
