Planning a treatment

The best time to treat your road in the Rogue Valley

By , owner-operator · Rogue Dust Control Last reviewed · 4 min read

The short answer

Treat your road soon after the wet season ends and before the summer dust sets in, on a stretch of dry forecast. In Medford the rain falls off sharply in June. NOAA normals give 0.24 inches in July and 1.25 inches across June to August. Avoid treating just before rain, and plan around any county road work.

Medford's dry season, in NOAA numbers

NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for Medford's airport station put the year's rain at 18.43 inches, and very little of it in summer. May averages 1.34 inches, and then the rain falls away, to 0.68 in June, 0.24 in July, 0.33 in August and 0.48 in September, before October brings 1.22 again. June through August together average 1.25 inches. The normal July high is 91.6°F.1

Why right after the wet season

The USDA Forest Service's dust palliative guide gives the timing rule in one line.2

"Apply suppressants, especially salts, immediately following the wet season."

USDA Forest Service, Dust Palliative Selection and Application Guide

It adds that, where possible, applying after rain helps, because the road material is wetter and easier to work.2 On Medford's numbers, that points to late spring, as the rain tails off into the dry months. Either way, we pre-wet the road with water before the truck sprays.

Don't apply just before rain

Both federal guides say the same thing. The Forest Service warns that a treatment put down just before a rain may wash away.2 The gravel roads manual is plainer still. "If rain is forecast or appears to be likely, don't take a chance."3 I'm with the manual on that one.

With May still averaging 1.34 inches, a late spring storm is the one to watch for.1 Our lignin treatment is fully dry in about two hours on a hot summer day, so what you want is a dry day or two after we spray.

Jackson County's own window

If you live on a county-maintained gravel road, the county's dust abatement program says its own surface stabilization work is "likely in late-June through July," and the county may also grade a road when potholes or washboarding appear.4 Grading after a treatment weakens it, so I'd ask Jackson County Roads what's planned for your road before you book. More in how the Jackson County program works.

Fire season overlap

In 2026, the Oregon Department of Forestry's Southwest Oregon District declared fire season from May 15, across about 1.8 million acres of state, private, county, city and BLM forestland in Jackson and Josephine counties.5 The date is set each year, so check the current declaration.

Our government and contractor work includes fire-season road spraying. If you're booking for a project or an agency, see government and fire-season dust control.

When we're busiest

Our busy season starts at the end of April and runs through August. May, June, July and August, we're fully in season. Then it dies down in September.

Late-season and off-season jobs happen too. Some folks book us late, as late as September, and outside those months we still take work, depending on the customer and on what the job needs for compliance. If that's you, give me a call and we'll talk it through.

Booking: when to call

Give me a call as soon as you know you want the road treated. Tell me roughly when it starts dusting, whether it's a county or private road, and anything planned for it, such as grading or new gravel. Then we'll pick a day that works for you. I drive the truck myself, so that's the day I'll be at your road. We answer seven days a week, 8am to 6pm.

Repeat seasons

Plan on doing it again next year. The gravel roads manual says "virtually all methods of dust control require annual treatment,"3 and our treatment is built to last the season. Traffic, trucks and gravel quality all change how a road holds up. See what sets the cost for how they show up in a quote.

Questions people ask

When is the best time to apply dust control in the Rogue Valley?

Right after the wet season ends and before the summer dust gets going, with a dry forecast ahead. The USDA Forest Service advises applying suppressants immediately following the wet season, and Medford averages only 1.25 inches of rain from June through August.

What if it rains right after the road is treated?

That's the main risk with any fresh treatment. The Forest Service warns that material applied just before a rain may wash away. Our lignin treatment is fully dry in about two hours on a hot summer day, so we'll look at the forecast together when we pick the day.

Do I need dust control every year?

Usually, yes. The gravel roads manual says virtually all methods of dust control require annual treatment. Ours is built to last the season.

When does Jackson County do its own road work?

For county-maintained gravel roads in its dust abatement program, Jackson County says its surface stabilization is likely in late June through July. Ask Jackson County Roads what is planned for your road.
